The British Electrotechnical and Allied Manufacturers' Association (BEAMA) warns of “Toxic Home Syndrome”, when poor air quality inside the home makes health deteriorate, and blames pollutants such as:
• Biological Pollutants: including mold spores and pollen
• Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): chemicals inside many cleaning products and air fresheners
• Gases: including natural radon gas and carbon monoxide that comes from cooking, smoking or burning candles and incense
• Building Materials: including paints containing lead and formaldehyde and asbestos materials
BEAMA also offers a list of tips to ensure a healthy home, with proper ventilation at number one. The association recommends homeowners install a mechanical ventilation system to make sure there is effective ventilation throughout the home.

Growing Ventilation Crisis in Thailand
A Mahasarakham University study indicated that since Thailand implemented legislation for building energy conservation, an increasing number of buildings have adopted energy-saving measures. These new energy-efficient buildings have more airtight construction as air-conditioning or chilling systems typically account for 50-60% of the total amount of building energy use. Reduced air exchange rate results in deteriorating indoor air quality from a buildup of trapped indoor pollutants, dust, bacteria and even viruses while opening windows or using ventilation systems with inadequate or no filters exposes home occupants to outdoor air pollution as well.
