Delta, Nissan and CSIRO Launch Trial of Victoria Government-Funded Joint Solar EV Charging Research

Melbourne, Australia, October 10, 2019– Delta Electronics Australia Pty Ltd. launched the trial phase for a Victorian Government-funded joint solar energy EV charging research project with its partners Nissan Australia and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

The milestone joint research aims to develop environment-friendly and cost-efficient charging options for EV owners with solar power chargers that do not require updates to grid connections and can operate in areas without grid power. With product development complete, the project now moves on to a 200-day field trial.

Delta developed the project’s solar-powered chargers which integrate Delta’s residential RPI Series Photovoltaic (PV) E5 inverter, BX 6.0 battery and AC Mini Plus EV charger in a single system. Delta’s products leverage the company’s leading expertise in power management and conversion with management software developed in-house for unrivaled performance.
Speaking at the event, Mr. David Leal, Director of Delta Australia & Eltek Australia, said, “Delta Electronics Australia successfully developed a solution combining a solar system with battery storage and EV charging. The idea has gone from prototype to a commercially ready field product in a short space of time. The success of this partner project has also encouraged us to push on with the development of solutions in higher-powered EV charging adapting.”

The system completed initial tests on performance in various environmental conditions at the CSIRO Monash facility’s temperature control chambers. CSIRO researchers developed and tested the system, incorporating a range of heat management strategies to ensure batteries charge and discharge efficiently. Researchers will now test three solar charging modules, capable of charging four vehicles each, over 200 days using multiple Nissan LEAFs at Nissan Australia’s national headquarters in Dandenong South.

“Nissan is proud to partner with CSIRO and Delta to deliver this innovative trial and acknowledges the investment of the Victorian Government in supporting this project,” said Nissan Australia Managing Director Stephen Lester. “Nissan is committed to helping innovate the way all its customers access EV charging, while a study of this nature will enable greater EV adoption both here and around the world reducing impact on the grid.”

In August 2018, the Victorian Government approved $210,000AUD in funds from the New Energy Jobs Fund (NEJF) towards the 18-month research project. Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Lily D'Ambrosio MP, Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, said, “We know we need to reduce emissions in the transport sector and one of the best ways we can do that is to support partnerships like this one. By encouraging electric vehicle take up, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and increase job opportunities in Victoria.”

As a global renewable energy and EV charging solutions provider, Delta elevates the charging experience for EV drivers across Europe, the USA, Asia and Australia. Delta collaborates with global industry leaders and government organizations who are leading the charge for green transportation to fulfill the company brand promise: Smarter. Greener. Together.
